What is Equine Podiatry?

Equine podiatry is the specialised science and practice focused on the health, structure and function of the equine hoof and foot. It goes beyond simple trimming — it is an evidence-based, holistic approach to hoof care that considers the whole horse, the environment, the way the foot functions, and how all these elements interact to affect movement, comfort and long-term soundness. At its core, equine podiatry seeks to understand how a horse’s hoof naturally functions and adapts and uses that understanding to support optimal hoof health, often without the use of traditional metal shoes. Practitioners work closely with horse owners and other equine professionals to promote healthy hooves, prevent problems, and manage existing issues through skilled trimming, advice on management and environment, and a strong emphasis on education.

Why Equine Podiatry Matters

The hoof is literally the foundation of a horse’s health — what happens at the feet influences movement, performance, and overall well-being. Well-managed hoof care can help reduce lameness, support soundness throughout life, and keep horses comfortable and capable of the work they are asked to do. Equine podiatrists bring specialist insight into hoof anatomy and biomechanics, helping owners understand their horse’s feet and how best to look after them.
